There are a lot of things new hamster owners need to know. It is wise to find out all the hamster information you need before you buy the hamster. For example different breeds of hamsters make better pets than other breeds. You can save your self a lot of trouble and possibly even heart ache if you do your homework first.

In this article we will look at the basic hamster information you need to know to properly care for your hamster. The first thing your new hamster will need before you even leave the pet store is a home.

Let’s look at a few types of hamster homes you have to choose from. There are two types of cages you should consider; metal and a glass aquarium. Neither of these homes comes with all the fancy toys your hamster will enjoy so you would need to also purchase additional items to decorate and keep your hamster happy with plenty of toys for optimal exercise.

The most popular type of home is the plastic “condo” style home these come in two and three floor styles and offer your hamsters a ton of physical activities to keep him/her active and in good health. Just make sure the home is not made out of toxic plastic, this will harm your hamster. Before you go shopping make sure you look up some of the homes you like and check the manufactures website to see what the homes are made of and what type of paint if any was used.

Most hamster homes bought at a pet store are safe just double check to be sure. Also keep in mind the size of tubes and check for small places your hamster could become stuck if she is to become pregnant or enjoys chewing a lot. These items may need to be replaced as your hamster grows.

The next thing you need to look at is your hamster’s diet. Just like humans hamsters need a well balanced diet to thrive. Most of the hamster foods sold on the market has all the nutritional items your hamster needs. It is feeding your hamster a diet you prepare yourself and treats that you need to be cautious with.

Hamsters need grains, fruits, vegetables and proteins. Your pet needs what is called micro and Marco nutrients. If you plan to skip the bag food for your hamster then you need to know that your hamster will need a combination of the following foods.

Seeds and nuts

Dried or fresh fruits (cut into tiny pieces)

Lettuce or other green leafy vegetables

Treats are usually a fruit served in small portions, as they are high in sugar and     already a part of your hamster’s diet.

Your pet’s home and diet are only two of the basic hamster information you need to know to care for your hamster so they live a long and happy life. It is a good place to start! You will also want to consider any illnesses that the breed of hamster you own is prone to and always try to be prepared for an unexpected injury. Hamsters are not known to be clumsy but they do get injured on occasion.

What Do I Need To Buy For My Dwarf Hamster Cage And Supplies?

October 15, 2010 by admin

When you decide to have pets, obviously you must obtain the necessary supplies for them in order to ensure their wellness, even before they arrive. Dwarf Hamsters also need specific supplies just like any other pet, and these supplies are essential to provide a comfortable and healthy home environment for them, causing them as small amount of stress as possible.

The very first thing you need for your Dwarf Hamster is a cage. They can thrive in different types of cage such as wire, an aquarium tank, or a plastic one, so all you need to do is to make sure that they have adequate room to run around and play. The size of the cage matters, especially if you plan to house two hamsters together or you want to breed baby hamsters, so you should think about these things in advance before you purchase a cage.

If you already have a cage, what other accessories do you need for your Dwarf Hamster?

The next thing that you need to have is a substrate for the cage. Put one or two inches thick of substrate on the entire floor of the cage and then place additional substrate five to six inches thick on one or both sides of the cage to allow the hamsters do their climbing and digging, to satisfy their natural instincts.

Hamsters can also be trained to use a litter box. Try the following tips to teach your pet to use their “hamster potty”. First, search the cage for droppings and locate the area where they can be mostly found. Then buy a potty from the pet supply store and place it in the area where most of the droppings are located. Fill the potty with some hay or newspaper or even cat litter pellets, this is safer than clay or clumping cat litter, they can be the source of digestive or respiratory problems for your Dwarf Hamster if they eat them.

Dwarf Hamsters also need chew toys. Although most people correlate chew toys with dogs, they also play an important role in the hamster world. Hamsters’ teeth grow continuously and if they do not constantly trim them down, they will keep on growing until the hamster can no longer close its mouth and it will starve to death. Usually, chew toys are made of soft wood and come in various sizes, colors, and shapes. These toys should be examined everyday to assure that they remain safe and dirt-free.

An abundant supply of fresh water is required to keep your Dwarf Hamster healthy and hydrated. Hang a water bottle on the side of the cage to solve this problem. Dwarf Hamsters can learn proper use of these bottles at an early age, so you will not have to use water bowls that can easily get dirty, thumped or can easily spill, leaving the pet to dehydrate when you are not there. Check the water bottle every day and ensure that it does not have leaks or cracks.

In addition, you must also consider the importance of a nest in a Dwarf Hamsters’ house. They love to have a hiding place because they are generally shy creatures.

Need to Know Hamster Tips

September 24, 2010 by admin

Caring for any animal requires the owner to have patience and learn a few things about their pet. Hamsters are resilient little creatures that are easy to care for but they do have some needs. The following paragraphs will provide information on some need to know hamster tips so that your pet stays happy while he is with you.

The first hamster tips are to buy a hamster that is suitable for your home. Certain species of hamsters are better for children that others and if you have small children then you should opt for Chinese dwarfs. For older children or yourself you can opt for Syrian, Siberian dwarf or Campbell dwarfs. The right age to pick out hamsters from pet stores is four to seven weeks but many times older hamsters make great pets too. While picking out a pet you should pick out an individual who likes to sit in your hand or is friendly. If you see a sick animal then you should pick him up only if you know how to treat him. Most sick hamsters die if the new owner does not know how to cure them.

The second tip is to know how to handle your hamster. Most pets like their legs being supported when their owner lifts them since this makes them feel secure. If you have children in your house then you should teach them to love the animal and you should discourage them from shouting or harming the hamster. Hamsters are intelligent creatures that understand when their owners care for them.

The third tip is to clean your pet cage frequently. Dirty cages can cause your beloved pet hamster to fall ill and this would be bad for his health. You should clean your pet cage once every 7 days or more often. The cage should be washed once in a week and sterilized once a month. The new bedding should be dust free and it should be hamster safe.

The fourth tip is to know what substances your hamsters are allergic to. Most hamsters fall ill when their owners use pine or cedar bedding. Other things that can cause your hamster to fall ill include detergents, deodorant sprays and cleaning fluids. If you are using detergents or cleaning fluids to clean your hamster’s cage then you should ensure that you rinse the cage well before putting the hamster in. While using deodorants you should ensure that you use the spray in another room. Hair sprays and Teflon fumes are also toxic for hamsters. Certain food items like avocados, coffee, salt and chocolate are also toxic for hamsters.

There are several things to know about hamster tips, the ones listed above are just the basics and barely scratch the surface. Hamsters are delicate animals to have as a pet and learning all you can about them before you get one is the most important tip I can offer you.
