Virtual pets are perennial favorites during holiday gift season. Children love receiving an animal they can play with, love and take care of. Parents love the fact that these virtual pets do not have to be fed, taken out walks, or cleaned up on a regular basis. The popular pets this year are the Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters. While finding these hamsters are hit and miss at traditional stores, and may continue to be hard to find as the holiday season gets closer. they are also available at online venues such as Amazon and Ebay. If you are interested in snatching a Zhu Zhu pet hamster up for the holiday season, earlier is better.

Zhu Zhu Pets Hamster Toys are the hottest toy for Christmas 2009, it is the must-have holiday toy. They are are the hottest craze among kids age of 3 or 4 and expected to be the most popular toy of the year. BUT… Zhu Zhu Pets are playing the disappearing game. As we close in for the Christmas Holiday the Zhu Zhu pet it is getting more difficult to find and expensive.
These cute robotic creatures melted many hearts, but I had a hard time this Black Friday finding any zhu zhu pets for my kids. Toys R Us had just a 100 for the lucky first in line. I was able to get one, after standing on line for about 2 hrs! I decided I’m not running around town collecting all the pets I need one by one, so I went to Amazon. Yes, of course I paid more but it was worth the peace of mind knowing my kids won’t be disappointed this Christmas Holiday.
Amazon sells Zhu Zhu pets hamster toys for well over $20. It is the best chance of still picking them up in time for the Christmas Holiday. I strongly recommend you don’t wait, especially if your child or grandchild really has their heart set on this toy.

You won’t find too many Chinese Dwarf Hamsters that are pets today. This is because the breeding is quite difficult and you can’t own them in the majority of the United States. However, if you head to the northern parts of China and Mongolia you will find them running around in the deserts.
When you first see them they look more like a mouse as opposed to a hamster. If the truth be told they are actually part of the rat-like family of hamsters. You can tell just by looking at their long tails and bodies. If you are one of the lucky ones that owns a Chinese hamster you will notice they are around 10-12 centimeters when they are full grown. This still might confuse you a little and if that’s the case just look at their colors. You will find that the majority of Chinese dwarf hamsters have a grayish-brown color with a racing stripe (black) down their spine. When you turn them over you will see that the belly is white. This is the predominant colors, although there are two other color mutations out there. These are considered “wild traits,” which revolve around the dominate spot and the black eyed white version.
If you decide to purchase Chinese dwarf hamsters, don’t make one of the most common mistakes out there today. See, even though experts will tell you that pairing up dwarf hamsters is a good idea, you want to purchase an individual Chinese dwarf hamster. The females are by far the dominate sex in this race and they will seriously injure or kill the males. However, if you are set on purchasing more than one we recommend choosing the same race and making sure they have enough room. You can do this by getting a cage that is more than one level, which will allow them to make a new home without worrying about the other hamster. We also suggest purchasing a plastic or aquarium tank as opposed to a cage. Getting stuck in a wire cage can be a traumatic experience for anyone, especially children. In the end the best option is two females. Just make sure you get them at an early age so they will have a better chance of getting along.
Feeding Chinese Dwarf hamsters are very similar to any other hamster. We recommend seeds and pellets or fruits and veggies. You probably want to give them treats here and there, but something like Cheerios will be just fine. Then again, we do know some owners who feed them things like crickets and mealworms. Whatever you choose, make sure they have a fresh water supply on a daily basis. The best option here is a plastic bottle so you don’t have to clean the litter all the time.
Chinese Dwarf hamsters last about 2-3 years. Some of them you will be able to train or tame and others will not be able to be broken. Actually, most experts consider them to be more aggressive than most and extremely agile. When you see them jump for the first time you won’t believe it. This is also true when they hop on their exercise wheel, because Chinese Dwarf hamsters are extremely fast. If you take the time to secure the cage properly, you won’t have to worry about them trying to make an escape. In the end, if you’re a beginner we highly recommend choosing another hamster. This is especially true if you plan on getting one for a child under 12.

One should consider several important things before breeding dwarf hamsters. Taking these issues into consideration may help one to raise healthy dwarf hamsters easily.
Ideal age of female dwarf hamsters
Female dwarf hamsters usually are capable of producing pups when they reach the age of 4-6 months. It is important to select matured and healthy female hamsters so that they will not produce weak pups. This will also ensure that the dwarfs are capable of living longer. Most veterinarians suggest that female hamsters that age 4-6 months may allow you to have more lively and healthy pups. According to them, the percentage of acquiring good genes is high during those ages.
Housing the baby dwarf hamsters
Breeding dwarf hamsters doesn’t stop after the mother gave birth. One should consider how to house the pups and the mother. Typically, a healthy female dwarf can produce as much as 20 pups in a single delivery. Therefore, one should consider a cage that is roomy enough for these babies.
These babies should not be immediately separated from their mother. The female dwarf hamster should attend to the needs of her pups. Like humans, baby dwarf hamsters need nourishment from their mother. People who have experience in breeding dwarf hamsters suggest that one should install an extended cage in the event that the number of pups is more than the expected.
They should be properly fed with various meals to ensure good health. One may try feeding baby hamsters with small slices of cucumber, apples, oats and wheat germ. It is also important to provide them with clean water.
What to do with the pups
One cannot keep and care 20 baby hamsters in a given time. Therefore, it is advised to let other people get a chance to take good care of them. You may ask your local pet shop if they want to buy your hamsters. In the event that they do not want to purchase your hamsters, you may try selling them in parks or areas near the school. Having this kind of idea may help you earn extra money.
Breeding dwarf hamsters is not a tedious job. All you need to do is to give proper care to the mother while she is pregnant. This worthwhile activity is very rewarding and may allow you to venture in business.

The Russian Dwarf Hamster is scientifically known as Phodopus sungorus. Russian dwarf hamsters could actually refer to three different species of dwarf hamsters. These are the Roboroski’s dwarf hamster, the White Russian dwarf hamster, and the Campbell’s Russian dwarf hamster. They are usually about 10-12 cm long. They have a lifespan of 1 or 2 years or longer. They are more active in the evening but more alert during the day compared to Syrian Hamsters.
The Roboroski dwarf hamsters actually originated in the desert dunes of Mongolia and some parts of the China. They have longer legs than the Campbells’s and White Winter dwarf hamsters. Their appearance is that of a brown colored coat and an undercoat of a slate grey.
The White dwarf hamster is the rarest of the three species of dwarf Russian hamsters. They are friendly. They change their colors during winter like becoming white so as to protect themselves from predators. Their dark grey color changes to white. They are also browner in color compared to those non-changing color breeds of hamsters. White dwarf hamsters are very interesting. Although they retain their camouflaging capabilities while in captive, their abilities are reduced depending on the indoor artificial lights they have been exposed to. They can be differentiated from albino hamsters because of their black eyes contrary to the pink eyes of albinos.
The Campbell’s Russian dwarf hamsters are also called Djungaria. They came from the Mongolian region named as such. These hamsters are the most seen in stores and quite popular. There have been a variety of colors of the Campbell’s hamsters because of the spur of creative breeding.
Dwarf Russian hamsters are more docile. They are very near sighted. The owner of dwarf Russian hamsters should talk to them first so they will become calmer and most likely won’t bite.
Although they are of different varieties, one thing they have in common is the amount of care they require. They are all hamsters, after all. They should be treated with care so that they too will behave. Do not mistreat them.

Russian Dwarf Hamsters: History and Behavior

The dwarf Campbells Russian hamster were named after the person who discovered them in the year 1905 by Thomas Campbell, these hamster were then kept in Gamalyea Institute in Moscow. In 1963, these Campbell hamsters were then imported into the United Kingdom by the Holloway College in London and the London Zoological Society. Ten years after, in 1973, the United Kingdom was successfully breeding these Campbell hamsters in their laboratories.

The Russian Dwarf Hamster is scientifically known as Phodopus sungorus. Russian dwarf hamsters could actually refer to three different species of dwarf hamsters. These are the Roboroski’s dwarf hamster, the White Russian dwarf hamster, and the Campbell’s Russian dwarf hamster. They are usually about 10-12 cm long. They have a lifespan of 1 or 2 years or longer. They are more active in the evening but more alert during the day compared to Syrian Hamsters.

There happens to be a large number of dwarf hamster types existing throughout parts of Russia and China, but only four of the species are bred in captivity and each one of those can make a terrific pet. And, although the standard size Golden hamster is much larger, the mini dwarf hamster most surely will require a similar level of responsible care. Not surprisingly, the tiny dwarf hamster is more fragile, a bit more anxious and extremely quick to get a way. The best policy with these tiny critters is to provide the most secure enclosure possible, as it doesn’t take much of an opening for them to disappear through.
Gratefully, the habitats and various cages that are easily obtained will serve any type of hamster quite well, providing the area and dimensions of the equipment matches the physical size and level of activity of the animal to be contained. A common mistake is to think that the typical cage, which is designed for the full size hamster is a suitable habitat, but that’s about as secure as a screen door in a submarine. Fortunately, the tubular style habitats and closely spaced barred cages are now readily available. And, don’t overlook the tried and true aquarium tank for maximum escape proof protection and easy cleaning.
Because of their highly active metabolism, these little dynamos need lots of exercise, and as a consequence, it’s important to accessorize the cage with a top rated hamster wheel. Actually, a more secure activity gadget is known as the hamster ball, which is a type of 360 degree enclosed device that provides the same opportunity for exercise, without the risk of injury or escape, when utilized out of security of the cage. In the native surroundings of their homeland, some hamster types have been observed traveling up to 8 miles during an overnight search for food. So, there’s an obvious health and fitness need to their relentless quest for physical activity. The best approach to ensuring the optimal intake of health sustaining nutrition is to provide a variety of foods, which include the staple hamster pellets, various mixtures of seeds and moderate amounts of nutritious veggies and fruit. Also critical to proper health is the opportunity to gnaw on a variety of safe materials. Otherwise, they’ll chew on everything in sight, as a means to control the constant growth of their front teeth. Materials such as plastics and metals may develop rough jagged edges that can cause injuries that result in wound infections.
Weekly habitat upkeep should include a comprehensive program for cage, toys and accessories sanitation. Cleaning should include washing all of the items in a warm mixture of water and gentle soap, after which everything needs to be rinsed thoroughly. Clean dry base material can be introduced when the habitat has completely dried, thereby avoiding the growth potential of bacteria and harmful mold. Be certain to avoid any strong chemical cleaners, as any remaining residue may cause irritation to hamsters, and in extreme cases may contribute to illness or worse.
Finally, these little guys will require some measure of responsible care, but none of that will ever match the hours of entertainment and loving affection provided by this wonderful little creature in return.

Are Baby Dwarf Hamsters Easy To Take Care Of?
Dwarf Hamsters can give birth to around ten babies per litter after completing a gestational period that lasts 18-20 days. Typically, the standard litter size of a Dwarf Hamster is only 5 to 6 babies. Before you make the decision to breed Dwarf Hamsters, you must have everything well planned to deal with the litter when your hamster mother gives birth. It is recommended that owners conduct plenty of research about the breeding process so that they can raise the pups successfully, if you just let it happen you are in for a big shock, and you may endanger the litter.
For the first 10 days after their birth, baby Dwarf Hamsters must stay with their mother. You should not have any close contact with them whatsoever, if your scent gets on them the mother will kill them, it is also not advisable to transfer them to a different cage. After four days, the baby Dwarf Hamsters will have some color, and they will get their fur after seven days. When they are on their tenth day, the babies will begin to open their eyes, crawl and reach the water bottle. During this time you can start holding them for short periods of time. Sometimes mothers are over-protective of their little ones, so before grabbing them observe their mother’s reaction first. Baby Dwarf Hamsters must be handled with exceptional care, because they are very restless and when you do not hold them properly they may possibly be injured by falling from your grip.
Once they are more than 10 days old you can start taming the babies by handling them more frequently, offer them treats of solid food as they start to eat regularly around the two week mark. You can give them servings of oats, oatmeal, wheat germ or small birdseeds. Once they are about three weeks old, the baby Dwarf Hamsters can eat fresh food with a mixture of lab blocks. Your pets will grow much faster and healthier when you feed them with small grains, something many experienced owners recommend. Slices of cucumber and red apple can also be included in your baby hamsters’ diet to promote their growth.
Eventually when the babies are able to find other ways to feed themselves, their mother will nurse them less often. They will be completely weaned after four weeks. You should also transfer them, grouped by sex, to their corresponding cages, because leaving the male baby any longer with his mother will result in the mother getting pregnant again. If this happens, the babies should be removed from their original cage as their mother will give birth to another litter after 18 to 20 days. This is obviously going to leave you with a lot of new baby hamsters, so avoid unnecessary inbred pregnancy, and separate male and female babies, and be prepared with two other cages in advance.
Once they are transferred to their corresponding cages, be sure to clean their houses at least once a week. However, if you have more babies in one cage, you need to clean it frequently because a crowded cage can get dirtier faster. It is essential to check on the health of the baby hamsters on a regular basis. Ensure that they are all receiving enough food and water and they are not injured from fights with their litter mates. Once they are four weeks old, you can sell them or give them away.
