Most people who have hamsters, mice or gerbils automatically know that a hamster wheel is put into the cage to give them someplace to exercise inside their cage when they need to run due to being bored, having excess energy or just wanting something to do. Gone are the days when you only had one or two choices… maybe up to five different designs and only a couple of different colors. Today’s hamster wheel comes in both freestanding and attachable designs that hook onto the opening at the top of the cage and also come in many different colors as well as materials.

Let’s talk about the materials that a hamster wheel can be made from today and a bit about which is better. Today the wheels are mainly made from either very durable plastic or metal mesh whose openings are very, very small given the fact that the hamster’s feet and toes are so small. Some people prefer to get the freestanding wire mesh or metal wheel for their hamster so that the hamster can enjoy the solid comfort of the metal underneath of it’s feet as it runs and exercises on the hamster wheel. Other owners prefer to get the plastic hamster wheel for their furry little critter. The next question that they need to decide upon is whether they will get an attachable or freestanding wheel that goes in the hamster’s cage itself.

There are also wheels that are built into other toys like race cars so that your hamster can enjoy running on his or her hamster wheel but yet be outside of their cage for a little while to get some good long exercise and play time with you, their owner, and other pets in the house (if there are any others). These particular wheels are sure to be a big hit with your furry little companion. The question of whether a plastic or metal wheel is better all depends upon your hamster and what you feel is best for them. If you are not sure, you might want to ask the sales person at the pet store or someone else who owns a hamster for their advice.

Another thing that you will want to think about is do you want a freestanding or attachable/hanging wheel. This is something that you are definitely going to have to decide upon as well when you are looking for hamster toys in general and the wheel specifically.

The advantage of the hanging hamster wheel is that your hamster cannot push or pull it all over the place or knock it over while having fun playing with their other toys.

What really makes a hamster a good pet is a question that many people have been asking about that humble little hamster for as long as people have been keep animals as pets. There are many different reasons that you might want to choose a hamster as a pet; the least of which is that they are among the smallest pets that you can find, which is perfect for young children from 6 years of age on up to a teenager. The interesting thing is that even adults will find themselves in love with these adorable little creatures; as a hamster is a perfect pet for an adult who does not have the time for a dog or other types of pets that requires a lot of time and attention.

Most people are aware that the humble little hamster is definitely related to rats, mice and other rodents; yet may or may not know that they are not rodents (even though they are related). This may seriously create a problem if someone is not really interested in mice or rats or rodents of any type. If you really want to choose a hamster as a pet you will need to remember that these little creatures are related to the mice that we are always trying to get rid of.

A good thing that most people (who do not mind that the hamster’s connection to rodents) really fall in love with a hamster due to the fact that these cute little creatures are so soft and cuddly and snuggly. Kids really like to snuggle with a small animal that is soft and fluffy; and so do most adults as well. Can you think of a better first pet for your children; or a pet to keep you company if you live alone than a hamster?

There is another great thing about a hamster that most adults (parents and non-parents alike) really like; the fact that the hamster really does not need that much space to live comfortably. All you really need to provide a hamster with to make it comfortable and well taken care of in terms housing is a cage that is a minimum of 12 inches wide by 18 inches long by 18 inches high. This will give the hamster room to move around as well as for you to put a hamster wheel in its cage and a few toys for your hamster to play with.

There is definitely something else that you need to remember; and that is that your hamster will also need attention from you to stay happy and healthy and in good spirits. Taking your hamster pet out of its cage will do wonders for it.
