Hamsters, one of America’s most popular pets, are members of the rodent family.  These little furry creatures have been a favorite pet of countless children over the years.  Hamster comes from a German word that means loosely to hoard, which is exactly what rodents like to do most.

Hamsters are by nature nocturnal creatures.  If you have one that shares a room with you, there’s no doubt you have awoken many times to the sound of a hamster wheel going at full speed.  This nocturnal instinct also carries over to their eating habits.  It’s best to give them something to snack on just before you retire for the night so they’ll have the energy to get a full night of exercise.

Hamsters are not overly picky when it comes to eating.  The best choice however is a quality hamster food designed especially for the species.  A good mix will contain a variety of seeds and grains such as cracked wheat.  In nature, hamsters and other rodents feed mainly on these types of things so it makes sense to continue the diet in captivity.

Just because hamsters eat mainly seeds and grains doesn’t mean they’re not willing to feast on other high protein sources.  Nuts and even the occasional piece of meat or cheese will not harm the animal and will spice up their diet.  Just make sure that these foods are the exception rather than the rule and make hamster food the main staple.

Many of the hamster foods on the market today are supplemented with fruits and vegetables such as carrots, raisins, apples and other common plants.  Any new food should be introduced slowly in very small portions to make sure the animal can handle it.  Remember, a hamster is very small and even a tiny amount of the wrong food can harm or even kill them.  If you supplement with fresh fruit and vegetables, make sure the food is washed first to remove pesticides

Life in a cage can get boring and every hamster enjoys a fun game to break the monotony.  One of their favorites is hide the treat.  Take the animal out of the cage and bury treat in various spots around the cage.  This will occupy the hamster and stimulate their natural instinct to forage for food.  Remember where you placed the treats and make sure the hamster either eats them or they are removed the next day in order to avoid food borne contamination of the cage.

Be careful to not over feed the hamster.  A hamster will eat long after its full, not knowing when the next meal will come.  This can quickly lead to an obese hamster and no one wants that.  On the other hand, if your hamster eats too many treats and becomes too picky to eat his normal food, back off the treats until he begins to eat normally again.

Hamsters don’t require a lot of water, but a fresh supply should always be on hand.  Change the water daily to avoid fecal contamination.

This is only a partial list of the foods that fall under the list of hamster food that can be fed to both the Syrian and the dwarf breeds of hamsters without giving them things that are too harsh or just not that good for them. You van feed both breeds of hamster just about any type of green leafy vegetable that you would eat yourself as well as green , orange, yellow and red peppers chestnuts and dandelion leaves and flowers. All of these are completely safe for both the Syrian and dwarf breeds as they normally eat a good bit of greens out on the wild. You can also feed your hamster cooked, unseasoned beef, turkey or chicken.

Things like apples, grapes, cherries, melons, mangoes, peaches, pears and other sweet sugary fruits and some vegetables (sweet potatoes, squash, corn, peas and carrots) should only be fed to the Syrian breed of hamster. The reason for this is that the dwarf breeds are genetically prone to diabetes, so those sweet sugary foods need to be off the hamster food list for dwarf hamsters.

This last section is going to cover those things that you absolutely cannot feed to either breed of hamster because they are dangerous to the hamsters in one way or another. You are not going to be doing your hamster any favors if you have any of these foods on your hamster food list under acceptable foods: chocolate, candy and other junk foods, raw potatoes, tomato leaves, buttercup flowers, pork, lunch meats fruit pits or seeds, citrus fruits, almonds, peanut butter, almost all spices and seasonings and jellies/jams.

In order to have a happy and enjoyable pet, you should know some tricks and hints about Dwarf Hamster Supplies. These supplies are not hard to find, and also not expensive. There are many kinds of supplies you can buy for your pet.

Cages are one of the most important accessories for your dwarf hamster. The cage must be spacious and tall. Don’t buy oval or round cages, because hamsters easily get confused. You should buy a cage with 0.5 cm space between bars for your dwarf hamsters. Usually you can buy cages with a larger space between bars, but the dwarf hamster is smaller and could escape trough the bars. Don’t buy a glass or plastic cage, because the hamster could have trouble breathing in it. If you want a sophisticated cage on two or free levels, with tunnels and stairs, than you will probably have to pay more for it.

Also, you will have to pay attention to the toys of your pet. Always have wooden toys in his cage, as dwarf hamsters love to crunch these kinds of toys. The running wheel is also important. Keep in mind that your hamster doesn’t have the space to run as much as he would like, so you should teach him to run in the wheel as soon as possible.  You can also have a rubber ball in the hamster’s cage, as dwarf hamsters love to roll over the ball trough the cage. Don’t forget about the space tunnel toy, and the little hammock that all hamsters should have. Having toys that play sounds can be also fun, but keep in mind that your dwarf hamster could be annoyed by this.

You should also be careful with the food for your hamster. Try to teach your pet to eat healthy fruits and vegetables, especially in the first months of his life. Hamsters usually like carrots, apples and even crude potatoes. Try not to feed him with salads, oranges and lemons because it can harm his digestive organs. Later, you can try to feed him with Supahamster mix, as dwarf hamsters also need meat in their diet. You should also try different mixes of dry fruits and vegetables. See how your hamster reacts before deciding to stick with a certain kind of mix. You could also try mixed bars of fruit and vegetables, but be careful to throw away the bar after a few days.

Following these simple tips and tricks, you will be sure to have not only a happy hamster that your family will enjoy, but also a healthy dwarf hamster that will entertain your family for a long time. Always be sure that your pet has all the dwarf hamster supplies he needs.

There are three types of hamster food. Store bought has two kinds, pellets and mixed. The third option is homemade. If you want to feed your hamster the store bought food, you can choose from the pellets which is considered a complete diet for your hamster made with all the nutrients they need to survive and thrive.

By feeding your hamster the pellets they will also be able to keep their teeth thin and sharp and eliminate the need for any special treats like a salt lick that help keep the hamsters teeth sharp and thin. If their teeth get to dull or thick it can cause the hamster problems, most importantly the inability to eat.

Mixed hamster food is also a well balanced diet filled with nutrients for your hamster. Most mixed types of hamster food include; a mixture of grains, seeds, corn, apples, oats, bananas, barley. Some brands contain almonds and other “tasty treats” for the hamster. Feeding the hamster a mixed food also has its benefits. By nature hamsters like to forge for their food, so by sprinkling their food in the bedding they are able to satisfy that instinct.

Many hamster owners feed their hamster both the pellets and the mixture, alternating days or providing the hamster with half the recommend amount of each type of food. A hamster will only eat until it is full so you don’t need to worry about over feeding. If you find that the hamster does not like to eat out of the bowl then just sprinkle it in the bedding and he/she will find it and eat it.

The third option for feeding your hamster is homemade food. This option is very popular; people use their left over scrapes to make homemade meals. You just have to be careful what you feed the hamsters. Chocolate, processed sugar and food with additives can hurt your hamster. Some hamster owners even cook meat and feed it to the hamster, just make sure you let it cool down first and make sure the hamster eats it right away if it gets buried in the bedding and not consumed for a few days this could make your hamster very sick and even cause death.

When you make homemade food you have to be careful and use your common sense. Make sure the food is small enough for the hamster to eat and not choke on and make sure it is always fresh.

Hamsters like and can eat numerous foods including; dry cat food, carrots, all types of lettuce, broccoli, snap peas, apples, pears, bananas, nuts that are not flavored and only lightly salted, small amounts of peanut butter, both creamy and chunky, any dried fruit that is all natural and as I stated above even meat. Just don’t season it with onion or garlic powders.

Some hamsters are a bit picky about their food and you will learn what they like by trial and error this will help with the types of hamster food you should give them. Hamsters should also be provided with some type of treats either store bought or homemade. But do not go overboard with the treats, your hamster then may not eat their food and this will not be good for them. With their food you should always provide fresh water for the hamster to drink daily. Pregnant hamsters can have small amounts of milk included in their diet.
