    Reproduction

Chosing to breed your hamster can significantly shorten your females life.

The female hamster can start breeding from the early age of 8 weeks but you should wait until she is about 3 months old for her first litter. Do not breed a female hamster for the first time if she is older then 8 months as after this time her pelvic bones fuse in place, and although she can get pregnant she wont be able to give birth naturally, and it can kill her.

Female hamsters goes into heat every four days or so. To test when she is on heat stroke her back and she should arch her back and raise her tail, although this doesn’t work with every hamster. You may just have to place them together (in a new environment) every night for 4-5 nights untill mating takes place. Then try again on the forth and fifth days, if the female rejects the male, the chances are she is already pregnant.

Once you are sure she i pregnant, she should be kept in a quite place and given a nest box. The birth usually goes fine, and most the time it happens at night. On the 14th day of the pregnancy completely clean the cage, as you wont be able to touch it for the next few weeks.

Hamsters have the shortest pregnancy for any mammal the produces fully developed babies. The pregnancy only lasts for 16 -17 days never more, never less. The babies are born naked with their eyes and ears closed. You shouldn’t even look into the nest for the first nine days. The family should be left alone completely except for feeding, changing water, and removing a dead hamster.

Make sure she has as much food and water as she wants. When they are 5 weeks old they can be fully weaned and sexed, and kept in same sex groups until they start to fight.

Some females die when giving birth and some will kill all of their babies.

3 days I’d say would be nonsense. At least until after they are walking around and starting to feed on their own would be safest.

Don’t touch the babies for @ least 2 weeks. Also, give mama hamster as much peace & privacy as possible. Hamster moms tend to be nervous & may abandon or harm their babies if they feel threatened or stressed.

2-3 weeks. 3 weeks is best if if you touch them before hand the mother wont care for them

I would say 2 weeks. Don’t try any earlier!
